Tamil refugees detained from a university shelter and never returned to their families.
Background
A campus became a refuge
Fighting drove large numbers of civilians onto the Eastern University campus near Batticaloa. The institution served as a shelter where families expected greater security than in surrounding villages. Its residents included people displaced more than once.[1]
What happened
- 5 September 1990
Soldiers removed refugees
Amnesty reported that soldiers rounded up 159 young Tamil men in front of thousands of witnesses. Families subsequently received contradictory explanations and were unable to establish their relatives’ whereabouts. The report included a list of the disappeared.[2]
Impact & evidence
Different contemporary records
Amnesty’s contemporary report listed 159 people taken on 5 September. The later commission account commonly cited for that day listed 158, and separately recorded 16 people taken on 24 September. The difference between those records remains visible in the historical evidence. Families sought answers about people detained by the army who never returned.[1]
Aftermath & legacy
Families’ search for an answer
By Amnesty’s 1993 report, relatives had already spent three years seeking an explanation. The conspicuous, witnessed nature of the arrests made the failure to account for detainees particularly stark. Evidence from relatives and camp officials remains central to understanding what happened after the removals.[2]
