Background
Prosperity did not remove caste hostility
Kodiyankulam’s Dalit households had acquired material resources through agriculture and migration income. Their relative prosperity challenged expectations of dependence on dominant castes, against a background of wider caste conflict in southern Tamil Nadu.[1]

Police entered the village
A large police contingent raided homes, assaulted residents and destroyed possessions. Reports describe damage to household equipment, stored food and documents, as well as theft allegations. Authorities invoked law-enforcement aims; residents and investigators described a punitive attack on the community.[1]

The raid damaged property that supported everyday survival and economic independence: household goods, stored food, documents and savings. Residents reported assaults and the loss of cash and jewellery. Destruction of passports could also jeopardise overseas employment, an important source of income for families in the village.[1]
