Background
Mountain geography and vulnerable buildings
The magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck a region of steep valleys and dispersed settlements. Collapsing buildings caused extensive losses, while landslides damaged roads and complicated access to communities needing help.[2]
What happened
- 8 October 2005
Destruction and emergency response
The earthquake struck in the morning. Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas were severely affected. Local rescue efforts were followed by a large national and international operation, with transport and the approaching winter shaping priorities.[3]
Impact & evidence
A dated humanitarian assessment
OCHA's 2005 annual report recorded an official death toll above 73,000, 69,400 severely injured and about 3.3 million homeless in its account of the response in Pakistan. Later estimates differ; these figures represent that report's assessment rather than a definitive combined total for every affected country.[3]
Aftermath & legacy
Recovery beyond emergency relief
Shelter, health care and access were immediate needs, followed by reconstruction of homes, schools and services. The response depended on local communities as well as outside agencies; the number of participating organisations alone does not measure whether aid reached those most in need.[3]
