Cyclone Winston struck Fiji with exceptional intensity, destroying homes and disrupting livelihoods across exposed islands.
Background
An island-wide challenge with uneven impacts
Fiji's dispersed settlements and dependence on transport links complicated preparation and response. Housing, crops and essential services were exposed, while damage varied greatly between communities in the storm's path.[1]
What happened
- 20 February 2016
Landfall in Fiji
Winston crossed Fiji as an exceptionally powerful tropical cyclone. Destructive winds and coastal flooding damaged settlements, requiring emergency shelter, clean water and restoration of communications.[1]
Impact & evidence
Deaths and damaged livelihoods
The government's assessment recorded 44 confirmed deaths and approximately 540,400 people affected. Losses extended to farming, fishing, schools and household assets, so rebuilding houses alone could not restore the conditions people needed to resume everyday life.[2]
Aftermath & legacy
Recovery across islands
The aftermath involved national and international assistance alongside community-led recovery. Rebuilding stronger structures and restoring livelihoods raised questions about affordability and access. A complete assessment needs locally grounded evidence of how assistance was distributed.[1]
