Cyclone Tracy in Darwin
Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin at Christmas, destroying housing and forcing a major evacuation.
- When
- 24–25 December 1974
- Where
- Darwin, Australia

Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin at Christmas, destroying housing and forcing a major evacuation.
Background
A compact but destructive cyclone
Tracy's relatively small geographic size did not prevent catastrophic local damage. Darwin's exposure and the vulnerability of buildings turned the storm's passage into a city-wide emergency.[2]
What happened
- Christmas 1974
Homes and services destroyed
The cyclone struck during the early hours of Christmas Day. Water, power, sanitation and shelter were severely disrupted, making continued residence difficult for much of the population.[2]
Impact & evidence
Deaths on land and at sea
The commonly cited total is 71 deaths, including people lost at sea. Damage to homes left many survivors dependent on emergency shelter and evacuation, consequences not captured by the mortality figure alone.[1]
Aftermath & legacy
Evacuation and rebuilding
Most residents were evacuated while essential services were restored. Rebuilding changed the city and placed greater emphasis on cyclone-resistant construction. The social consequences included interrupted lives and difficult decisions about returning, alongside the engineering lessons.[2]
