Cyclone Idai in southeastern Africa
Cyclone Idai and associated flooding caused a major southern African humanitarian disaster.
- When
- March 2019
- Where
- Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi

Cyclone Idai and associated flooding caused a major southern African humanitarian disaster.
Background
Coastal and inland exposure
Communities faced wind, storm surge, river flooding and landslides. The event's impact extended beyond the landfall coast because rainfall and overflowing rivers threatened settlements and transport routes far inland.[1]
What happened
- March 2019
Beira and surrounding regions devastated
Idai struck central Mozambique near Beira, then brought destructive rain inland. Flooded roads and damaged communications isolated communities, complicating rescue, medical care and the delivery of clean water and food.[1]
Impact & evidence
More than a thousand recorded deaths
USAID’s 18 April 2019 situation report listed 603 deaths in Mozambique, 344 in Zimbabwe and 59 in Malawi: 1,006 across the three countries. This was a dated reported toll while recovery and searches continued. WHO still recorded 603 deaths and more than 1,641 injuries in Mozambique in July. The Mozambique figure excludes deaths in neighbouring countries.[2]
Flood damage became a health emergency
Flooded settlements and interrupted water supplies increased exposure to diarrhoeal disease. Damage to health facilities and roads complicated care for injured people and those needing routine treatment. The relief effort consequently included safe water, disease surveillance and medical support, alongside rescue and the distribution of food and shelter materials.[3]
Aftermath & legacy
Recovery and overlapping emergencies
Damaged water systems increased disease risks while destroyed harvests threatened food access. Cyclone Kenneth struck Mozambique the following month, placing further demands on response systems. The two cyclones caused separate, successive emergencies.[1]
