Tjalling Koopmans

Tjalling Koopmans was a Dutch-American economist whose work linked mathematics, production and economic efficiency. He shared the 1975 economics Nobel memorial prize with Leonid Kantorovich.

Early life

Scientific training

Began with mathematics at Utrecht, moved into theoretical physics and then studied mathematical economics with Jan Tinbergen.

Career

  1. 1936

    Doctorate

    Completed a Leiden dissertation on economic time series.

  2. 1948

    Cowles leadership

    Became director of the Cowles Commission.

  3. 1955

    Yale move

    Continued his work when the organisation moved to Yale.

Production and efficiency

Studied how combinations of inputs and outputs relate to efficient allocation and prices.

Beyond work

Migration

Moved to the United States in 1940 and became an American citizen in 1946.
