Karl Richard Lepsius

Karl Richard Lepsius was a German Egyptologist and linguist. His expedition drawings preserved extensive records of inscriptions, temples and tombs in Egypt and Sudan.

Early life

Classical studies

Studied at Leipzig, Göttingen and Berlin, completing a doctorate in 1833.

Career

  1. 1842–1845

    Prussian expedition

    Directed surveys of monuments in Egypt and Nubia.

  2. 1846

    Berlin appointment

    Became professor of Egyptology.

  3. 1865

    Museum leadership

    Became director of Berlin’s Egyptian Museum.
