Akihito was Japan’s emperor from 1989 to 2019. His public role emphasised remembrance, reconciliation and contact with ordinary people within Japan’s constitutional monarchy.
Early life
Imperial childhood
Born the eldest son of Emperor Hirohito and educated at Gakushuin.
Wartime evacuation
