Carl Rogers was an American psychologist who emphasised empathy and the client’s own experience in therapeutic relationships.

Early life

Changing direction

Studied at Wisconsin, entered Union Theological Seminary, then moved into psychology at Teachers College, Columbia, completing his doctorate in 1931.

    Became director of a child-protection organisation in Rochester.

    Set out his therapeutic approach in a major book.
