Martin Hairer
Austrian-British mathematician whose work addresses equations involving extremely irregular random inputs. His research in stochastic analysis earned a Fields Medal and the Breakthrough Prize.
Early life
Geneva education
Attended school and university in Geneva, completing a physics doctorate in 2001. As a school student he also developed sound-editing software.
Career
- 2001
Doctorate
Completed research supervised by Jean-Pierre Eckmann.
- 2014
Fields Medal
Received the award for work on stochastic partial differential equations.
- 2021
Breakthrough Prize
Was honoured for contributions to stochastic analysis.
Contributions
Regularity structures
Created a framework for interpreting and solving singular stochastic equations.
Random dynamics
Studied ergodicity, rough paths and related problems.
Beyond work
Software and family
Continued developing the Amadeus audio editor alongside mathematics. He married mathematician Li Xue-Mei in 2003.
