German-American researcher whose work on cholesterol and fatty-acid metabolism brought a share of the 1964 medicine Nobel Prize.

Early life

Education and exile

Studied chemistry in Munich, fled Nazi persecution to Switzerland in 1934 and moved to the United States in 1936. Earned a Columbia doctorate in 1938.

    Held the Higgins Professorship of Biochemistry.
