Edward Sabine

Edward Sabine was an Irish-born scientist and army officer whose research included geodesy, astronomy and Earth’s magnetic field.

Born into an Anglo-Irish family.

Military education

Studied at Woolwich before joining the Royal Artillery in 1803.

Career

  1. 1818

    Arctic science

    Joined John Ross’s Northwest Passage expedition as its astronomer and scientific officer.

  2. 1819

    Parry expedition

    Returned to the Arctic with William Parry and conducted magnetic observations.

  3. 1861–1871

    Royal Society president

    Led the Royal Society after serving as its foreign secretary and treasurer.
