Early life

Formative study

Born in Bungo Province to a doctor serving Oka Domain. Excelled at its academy before ill health interrupted his schooling; later studied painting.

Career

    Historical research

    Travelled to Edo to prepare an official history project.

  2. 1811–1813

    Reform and retirement

    Petitioned for administrative reforms, then withdrew from domain service.

  3. 1825

    Nagasaki

    Studied Chinese painting techniques with visiting painters.
