Sukarno
Sukarno helped unite an independence movement across the Dutch East Indies and became the first president of Indonesia. His leadership promoted anti-colonial solidarity but increasingly concentrated power, ending amid the upheaval of the 1960s.
Early life
Colonial upbringing
Educated in Java under Dutch rule and exposed to nationalist politics while living in Surabaya.
Engineering education
Studied civil engineering in Bandung before building a political career.

Nationalist organising
Helped found the Indonesian National Party and endured imprisonment and internal exile under Dutch rule.
- 1942–1949
Occupation and independence
Worked with Japanese occupation authorities, proclaimed independence with Mohammad Hatta and led through the revolution.

Presidency and removal
Moved towards Guided Democracy, then lost power to Suharto after the 1965 crisis.
