Rai San’yō was a Japanese historian, poet and scholar of the late Edo period.

Early life

Scholarly family

Grew up in a Hiroshima-domain samurai family and studied with relatives before attending the Shōheikō in Edo in 1797.

Career

    Kyoto

    Moved to Kyoto and opened a school.

  2. 1813

    Literary circle

    Began an enduring literary exchange with poet and painter Ema Saikō.

  3. 1827

    Historical work

    Completed Nihon Gaishi.
