R. P. Sethu Pillai combined teaching with writing about Tamil language, literature and history. His academic career culminated in leadership of the Tamil department at the University of Madras.

Law and language

Trained and practised as a lawyer before turning to teaching; a 1912 speech by Maraimalai Adigal helped deepen his interest in Tamil.

    Became head of Tamil at the University of Madras.
