Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o
A Kenyan novelist, playwright and essayist whose work examines colonialism, land and power. He moved from English toward Gikuyu writing and became a leading critic of linguistic inequality.

Grew up during British colonial rule and the conflicts surrounding the Mau Mau uprising.

Attended Makerere and later studied at Leeds.
