Max Frankel
American journalist whose career moved from overseas correspondence to the executive editorship of The New York Times. His reporting on Nixon’s visit to China earned a Pulitzer Prize.
Early life
Refugee childhood
Born in Gera, Germany, he reached New York with his mother in 1940. At Columbia he edited the student newspaper and began part-time reporting for the Times.
