Early life

She grew up in Grantham, where her father combined shopkeeping with local politics and Methodist preaching.
Chemistry, then law
At Oxford she studied chemistry and became active in Conservative politics. She later trained as a barrister.

Elected MP for Finchley, she rose through junior posts before becoming education secretary.
