Early life

Education amid hardship

Born in Petorca, lost his father in 1822 and supported his studies by tutoring. Qualified as a lawyer in 1833.

Career

    Education leadership

    Served as rector of the Instituto Nacional.

    Entered Congress and held ministerial posts under Manuel Bulnes.

    Served two terms amid political conflict.
