Luc Montagnier
French virologist whose team’s isolation of HIV was recognised by the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His later health claims were controversial and did not share the evidential standing of that discovery.
Early life
Scientific education
Grew up in Chabris, developed an interest in science as a teenager and studied at Poitiers before doctoral work in Paris.
Career

Joined the Medical Research Council’s virus research unit.

Pasteur Institute
Moved into research there after leading a laboratory at Institut Curie.
- 1983
Virus isolation
Worked with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and colleagues on the virus later called HIV.
Contributions
HIV research
The team published its isolation findings in Science.
Nobel Prize
Shared the medicine prize; his portion recognised the HIV discovery.
Beyond work
Family
Married Dorothea Ackerman in 1961. They had three children.
