Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch-born painter who settled in Britain and became known for imagined scenes of ancient Roman life.

Early life

Training

Grew up in Friesland and entered the Royal Academy of Antwerp in 1852. His early training encouraged close attention to historical costume.

Career

    Worked with Louis de Taeye before developing his own historical paintings.

    Settled in England and established a successful career.
