Karl Friedrich Meyer
Swiss-born American researcher who linked laboratory microbiology with practical public health. His investigations spanned animal infections, food safety and the ecology of disease.
Early life
Swiss education
Studied in Basel and Zurich, concentrating on biology and laboratory techniques. Earned a veterinary doctorate in Zurich in 1909.
Career

Worked as a pathologist with Arnold Theiler, investigating livestock diseases.

Joined the University of Pennsylvania to teach pathology.

Returned to Zurich for a doctorate in bacteriology.

Beyond work
Family
Married Mary Elizabeth Lindsay in 1913; they had a daughter. After her death, married Marion Grace Lewis in 1960. Became a US citizen in 1922.
