Juris Hartmanis

Juris Hartmanis was a Latvian-born American computer scientist and joint recipient of the 1993 Turing Award.

Early life

Education and displacement

Left Latvia as a refugee in 1944, studied in Germany and completed a mathematics doctorate at Caltech in 1955.

Career

    General Electric

    Joined its research laboratory.

    Cornell

    Became a professor and the first chair of its computer-science department.

  3. 1996–1998

    National Science Foundation

    Led its computing directorate.
