Jim Montgomery
Jim Montgomery is an American swimmer and coach who won three gold medals and a bronze at the 1976 Olympics. His 49.99-second victory in the 100-metre freestyle broke a major barrier in the event.
Early life
Madison swimming
He grew up in Wisconsin, swam at the local YMCA and represented Madison East High School. A scholarship took him to Indiana University, where he trained under Doc Counsilman and studied business.

Won five gold medals at the inaugural championships.

Montreal Olympics
Won the 100-metre freestyle and two relays, plus bronze in the 200-metre freestyle.

Coaching
Developed masters swimming programmes in Dallas.
