James Stirling

British architect whose work evolved from forceful modernism toward complex combinations of historical references and new forms. He worked with James Gowan and later Michael Wilford.

Early life

Liverpool training

Grew up in Liverpool, studied art and worked in an architect’s office. After wartime service, studied architecture at Liverpool University.

Career

  1. 1956

    First partnership

    Established a practice with James Gowan.

  2. 1963

    Independent office

    Continued with assistant and future partner Michael Wilford.

  3. 1981

    Pritzker Prize

    Received the international architecture award.

Selected buildings

Leicester Engineering Building

Combined geometric workshops, towers and glazed roofs.

Neue Staatsgalerie

Designed the Stuttgart museum extension with Wilford.

Beyond architecture

Family

Married designer Mary Shand in 1966. They had a son and two daughters.
