James Hillier

James Hillier was a Canadian-American scientist who helped turn electron microscopy into a practical research instrument.

Early life

Toronto studies

Studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto, where his graduate work included electron-microscope development.

Career

  1. 1938

    Toronto prototype

    Built an electron microscope with Albert Prebus.

  2. 1941

    RCA

    Joined the company’s research operation in New Jersey.

  3. 1957

    Laboratory leadership

    Became general manager of RCA Laboratories.

  4. 1977

    Retirement

    Left RCA and continued advising on science and technology.
