George E. Smith and Willard Boyle developed the charge-coupled device at Bell Labs. The invention became a foundation of electronic imaging in cameras and scientific instruments.

Education
Served in the US Navy before studying at Pennsylvania and completing a physics doctorate at Chicago in 1959.
