Early life

Family move

Moved from Ireland to London as a child.

Merchant navy

Went to sea as a teenager and trained as an officer.

    Discovery expedition

    Travelled to Antarctica with Robert Falcon Scott.

  2. 1907–1909

    Nimrod expedition

    Led a party that came within about 100 miles of the South Pole.

  3. 1914–1922

    Later expeditions

    Led Endurance and died during a further Antarctic voyage.
