Emily Kame Kngwarreye

Emily Kame Kngwarreye was an Anmatyerr artist whose paintings grew from ceremonial practice and knowledge of her Country. Her late-life canvas work gained international recognition.

Early life

Alhalker

Grew up in the Utopia region of central Australia.

Working life

Worked on cattle stations and practised ceremonial painting before her commercial art career.

    Batik

    Began working with wax-resist fabric techniques.

  2. 1978

    Women’s collective

    Helped establish the Utopia Women’s Batik Group.

  3. 1988

    Painting on canvas

    Moved into acrylic painting through a community project.
