Dave Gallaher
New Zealand rugby captain whose touring side won 34 of 35 matches. Later served as a selector before dying from wounds suffered during the First World War.
Early life
Ireland to New Zealand
Born in Ramelton and migrated with his family as a child. Joined Ponsonby’s rugby club in Auckland in 1895.

Represented Auckland.

Played on New Zealand’s unbeaten Australian tour and in its first Test.

Led the side through Britain, Ireland, France and North America.

Co-wrote a technical rugby book with Billy Stead.
Beyond sport
Family and service
Married Ellen Ivy May Francis in 1906; their daughter was born in 1908. Served in the South African War and later in Europe, where he was fatally wounded at Passchendaele.
