Charles Barry

English architect whose public buildings helped shape nineteenth-century London. Also worked in Italianate architecture and country-house gardens.

Early life

Formative travel

Studied buildings and made drawings during extensive journeys through Italy, Greece and the eastern Mediterranean.

Career

  1. 1821–1825

    Church commissions

    Designed churches in Manchester and Whitefield early in his British practice.

  2. 1836

    Palace of Westminster

    Won the competition to rebuild Parliament after the 1834 fire, working with Augustus Pugin on its Gothic design.

  3. 1850

    Royal Gold Medal

    Received the Royal Institute of British Architects gold medal.

Beyond architecture

Family and interests

Married Sarah Rowsell in 1822 and had seven children. Regularly attended scientific lectures at the Royal Institution.
