Cathcart William Methven

Scottish civil engineer and architect whose work addressed the difficult entrance to Durban harbour. He also painted landscapes and helped establish the city’s art gallery.

Early life

Scottish training

Born in Edinburgh, apprenticed to engineer John Sang in Kirkcaldy before working on construction and harbour projects in Greenock.

Career

  1. 1886

    Greenock

    Became engineer-in-chief of the harbour trust.

  2. 1888

    Durban

    Moved to South Africa as harbour engineer.

  3. 1895

    Independent practice

    Opened a consulting engineering and architectural business.

Durban entrance

Advocated using pier extension and tidal scour to address the obstructing sandbar.

Investigated harbour sites along the coast.

Beyond work

Art and recreation

Founded Durban Art Gallery in 1892, painted Natal landscapes and enjoyed music and trout fishing.
