Carol Shields

American-born Canadian novelist and short-story writer whose fiction explores family, memory and everyday experience. Much of her best-known writing developed during her years in Winnipeg.

Early life

International study

Studied English at Hanover College and spent a year at Exeter. Later completed a master’s degree at the University of Ottawa.

Career

    Began teaching English at the University of Manitoba.
