Buster Keaton built comedy around bodies, machines and spaces that seemed to work against him. His finest silent films made elaborate physical action feel effortless, with an impassive face anchoring the chaos.
Early life
Born into vaudeville
His parents were touring entertainers. He joined their family act as a small child and learned the timing of physical comedy on stage.
A practical apprenticeship
Years of falls and knockabout routines taught him how to land and how an audience reads a movement. Film later gave those skills a larger canvas.

He began making films with Roscoe Arbuckle, discovering the possibilities of editing and visual effects.
