Bismillah Khan
Bismillah Khan was an Indian shehnai player whose sound became closely associated with Varanasi and national public occasions. He received India’s Bharat Ratna in 2001.
Early life
Musician family
Grew up in a family of hereditary musicians; his father played at the Dumraon court.
Varanasi training
Learned from his uncle Ali Bux, a shehnai player connected with the city’s temple musical life.
